Flash Flooding Damages Resources in OneSky’s ELC in Da Nang
Recent violent storms battered central Vietnam bringing historic levels of rainfall and drowning some areas in up to two meters of water in just 24 hours.
The Lien Chieu District of Da Nang, where OneSky’s Early Learning Center (ELC) is located, was the most severely impacted with flash floods causing homes, shops and roads to be destroyed. Fortunately, no lives were lost.
The ELC suffered substantial flooding on the first floor, causing children’s toys, books and learning materials to be swept away, and furniture to be damaged, in some cases, beyond repair. We are pleased to report there was no structural damage to the building.
As soon as the rain stopped and the flood water receded, our wonderful staff and parents from the local community came together to rid the center of water and mud, fix broken equipment and prepare classrooms to welcome the children back as quickly as possible.
And this community effort didn’t stop at OneSky’s doorstep. To help other local schools to reopen, the ELC responded to an urgent call for help from the district Department of Education and Training, to deliver emergency packages to primary and secondary schools in Lien Chieu District. A total of 10,000 notebooks, pens, uniforms, and other school supplies were provided to 1,000 students at 20 schools to help them resume their studies.
OneSky would like to thank those supporters who have donated to help us replace furniture in the classrooms and purchase new books, learning games, and art supplies. It is not too late to help and your support would be most appreciated.
Please keep the children, their families, and our caregivers in your thoughts as they, too, contend with the damage they experienced in their own homes.
