WenWei’s Smile

WenWei came to the institution as a fragile newborn.

The first time I saw him, he was quiet, but his eyes were filled with fear. He did not understand where he was, or why he was in this new place. WenWei entered the Infant Nurture program and I became his nanny.

At first, WenWei was very sensitive and timid. Any sudden sound would make him cry. Because he was so small, he could only drink a little milk formula at a time, and he would often throw up some of what he drank. I would quickly change his clothes, hug him in my arms, sing songs to him and kiss him.

Each day, I could feel a little more of his fear melting away. Gradually, WenWei became more outgoing and liked to play in the activity room. He loved listening to me read stories and playing with colorful toys. I helped WenWei learn to crawl by putting the toys he liked just ahead of him to attract his attention.

Now WenWei crawls everywhere in the activity room. He can even stand and move one or two steps on his own. He is no longer the fragile, timid boy he was when I first saw him. He almost always has a smile on his face. His smile is the biggest comfort in the world to me because I know my little WenWei is healthy and happy.

With all my heart, I hope WenWei finds a home where he can live happily ever after.
